Instagram filter in a bottle?

I have a love-hate relationship with complexion primers. I've tried many, but only one or two managed to live up to their claims and exceed my expectations. When I heard there is a primer out there that promises to erase any signs of a 'bad face day' I was a bit dubious but intrigued at the same time. So I gave in and splurged on the Becca First Light Priming Filter (YES, the title includes the word 'filter') hoping that it would get my skin selfie-ready and make my makeup last all day long. I've been using the primer for about a month now but even after the first use I realised that I may be slightly obsessed with it. The results blew my mind and got me hooked on this product which I like to consider an Instagram filter in a bottle!

Claims

The product claims to be a wake up call for the skin, leaving it hydrated, awake and refreshed. No signs of dullness or dryness allowed! Because of its violet hue, the primer is supposed to neutralise yellow tones, brighten and even out imperfections. Other ingredients such as refreshing spring water, prickly pear flowers, ginger or hyaluronic acid keep up the moisture levels, making the skin feel revived and plumped. Also it can be used by all skin tones and all skin types.

My experience

When I saw how purple the product actually is, I had a moment of hesitation and I had to think twice if I was ready to slather it all over my face or not. However, as soon as I started rubbing it into my skin the scary colour went on sheer, almost transparent in finish. Another thing that I noticed when the primer made contact with my face is how cooling and refreshing it feels. Truly a wake up call for my skin.

Unlike the other primers that I tried before, I didn't find this one to be sticky at all. Au contraire, it has a very smooth and silky texture, if not a bit liquidy, but it gets absorbed seamlessly, in the blink of an eye. After the product sinks in, my skin feels calmer and it looks like it has gotten a new flawless layer, just like you'd put a filter on a picture before it's ready for the 'gram...if that makes any sense.

The primer leaves my face looking so nice and dewy and despite having oily skin, it doesn't emphasise my 'natural glow'. It's super long-lasting and it definitely makes a difference in how my foundation applies and wears throughout the day. And if you're not convinced by now that this is an amazing primer, I'm gonna mention that it also hydrates the skin really well, getting rid of any dry spots or dullness.

The packaging is great as well! The product comes in a sturdy, frosted glass bottle and it has a pump dispenser which is really convenient and it gives out the perfect amount of what I like to call a 'face filter'. A little goes a long way so I usually squirt about half a pump or sometimes a pump, depending on my skin's needs on the day and how much hydration I want to feel. Oh and another thing about the primer that gets me really excited is the smell. Sometimes it makes me think of candy, sometimes it makes me think of lemons, but anyway it's a really fresh scent that definitely hits me pleasantly.

Overall, I'd have to say that I'm a huge fan of this primer and I would definitely repurchase it again. I've been using it almost every single day for about two months and even to this day I think 'wow, this is amazing' every time I apply it. This is actually the first product I own from Becca so I'm not very familiar with the brand but the First Light Priming Filter definitely got me curious and it's making me want to look more into what the brand has to offer.

What do you think of this primer? Does it sound like something you would use?

  3. Oh wow this sounds awesome, an Instagram filter in a bottle is definitely something I could use at the moment because my skin has just been freaking out this past week. I know it absorbs but that purple colour of the product is still pretty intimidating!

  5. Definitely would consider trying this out! Maybe if it was more in the £25 bracket then I'd buy it, but I'd consider it either way as I really want a new primer but I'm torn between the urban decay one and the smash box primer when I comes to splurging on a primer! Defo wanna try this though!

    1. I've used the smashbox one a few years ago and I didn't like it that much. It felt like I was putting silicone on my face. The becca one literally feels like a moisturiser when I put it on x
