Self-tanning 101 with Skinny Tan

A few weeks ago I was invited to Skinny Tan’s 1 Hour Express Mousse launch at Farm Girl Café and although I’ve never been crazy about fake tanning because of my fear of looking like an oompa loompa, I gladly went along to find out more about Skinny Tan’s products and how they work. I’ve been testing out their new express mousse (spoiler alert: it’s amazing!!) and a few other goodies to see if they’re as good as everyone seems to claim and to see if a person with zero tanning education like myself can work with fake tan without being left with streaks or patchiness.

First things first, let’s talk about prepping the skin before self-tanning. Exfoliation is such an important step and it makes such a big difference on the skin and how the tan applies and its finish. Skinny Tan have two products that go together so well and provide the best exfoliation ever, leaving you with the softest skin all prepped for tanning. Who know my knees and elbows could feel as soft as a baby’s butt?
The first product is the pre-tan primer. It is quite thin and creamy in consistency and it has tiny bits inside that do such an amazing job at removing all the dead skin, maybe an old tan and leaving the skin clean and smooth, like a blank canvas ready to be painted.
I use the pre-tan primer along with the exfoliating mitt, which is seriously life changing. It has two sides- brown and orange. I use the brown side to gently exfoliate and get rid of the dead and dull skin cells and prepare for a really smooth application of the tan. The orange side comes in handy when there’s a need to remove or correct excess tan. This side of the mitt has pro-level dermabrasion so if tanning goes wrong, which can happen to the best of us, you can easily fix the situation by buffing away the mistakes.
I like to exfoliate in the shower, preferably the night before I self tan just to make sure all my pores are closing before I put the tan on, otherwise it will settle into the pores and make them look really dark and noticeable.
And now the fun part- the tanning process itself. I’ve been kindly gifted Skinny Tan’s new 1Hour Express Mousse and also their 7 Day Tan. As I was pale as a ghost and also a tanning virgin, I decided to try out the express mousse first. This product gives you results in only one hour and depending on how dark you want to get you can leave it on for longer, even overnight, for the deepest, darkest tan.
I was so excited to see how easy the mousse went on and how even it applied. Oh, and did I mention it smells fantastic? When I put it on for the first time I only let the product develop for a little over an hour as I only wanted to get a light tan. For someone who is almost see through, an hour was a good amount of time and my skin ended up with a really nice tan, looking like I’ve been laying on the beach for a couple of days.
I love how easy it is to customise your tan with this mousse and I also love that it leaves no streaks, it doesn’t transfer to anything either it’s clothes or bedsheets and it also has a really nice cool tone, so you won’t turn orange after the tan develops. As a complete newbie when it comes to tanning, I can declare myself obsessed with the express mousse because it goes on so well and the finish is natural and most importantly, even.
To make the application really nice and easy, I use the dual tanning mitt, which feels so nice and luxurious on my skin. It actually says on the packet ‘luxury quality’ and I can agree with this claim 100%. The double sided mitt is the softest thing that’s ever touched my skin thanks to its high density velvet finish. And it does feel just like velvet when you touch it! I can’t compare it to other mitts because I haven’t tried others, but Skinny Tan did an excellent job with theirs. The tan goes on smoothly, the finish is streak-free and because the mitt is water resistant, it keeps the hands stain free. I get excited about tanning jus because I know I get to rub my skin with this super soft mitt.
Thanks to Skinny Tan I have become obsessed with tanning because their products make the process very easy and they’re so high quality, you can’t get anything else but the perfect tan! I’m so glad I was introduced to them because they made my first self-tanning experience a great one!
Do you use self-tanners? What is your favourite tanning brand?
